What We Do :

Peak Pursuits is a non-profit organization in Portland, Maine. Our mission is inspiring others to be environmental and community stewards through outdoor adventure. We help kids develop backcountry skills while working as a team, giving back to the community and learning about sustainability. Instead of kids going home to play video games or being left without supervision, they will now have the opportunity to play in the outdoors, run around, get their hands dirty and develop fundamental life skills. Peak Pursuits also offers adult programs to bring out the inner kid in everyone.

There are many great places to discover around Portland including state parks, nature preserves and the shores of Casco Bay. We want our participants to see how easily accessible they are and inspire them to explore further.  Peak participants may discover these places by hiking, biking, climbing, kayaking, snowshoeing or cross-country skiing. Through our expeditionary based curriculum participants not only become successful backcountry travelers, but they also learn to work as a team, serve their community and live healthy sustainable lives.

Skills covered may include first aid, leave no trace, camp etiquette, orienteering, navigation and much more. Our curriculum also incorporates day and overnight trips to explore further into the New England area including Acadia, the Bold Coast, Baxter State Park or the White Mountains.

Why We Do It :

Nature Deficit Disorder is a growing concern. Technology is taking over and kids are found glued to the television or found with their headphones in. Helping to get kids outside and become appreciative of the environment is important to us. Physical activity and exposure to nature is vital to children's well being. We also believe it is important to teach kids how to give back to their community, therefore we have incorporated this as a priority throughout our curriculum. We will listen to our community and help where necessary. This may include clearing trails, volunteering at a soup kitchen or growing food for the less fortunate. The outdoors is important to everyone though! Thus, we have also established programs for adults to get out and explore.
